As Christian denominations face dwindling congregations and an increasingly secular society, one church has turned to Facebook to spread the Word.
The Free Church of Scotland has defied its reputation for scepticism towards modernity by launching an advert on the social networking website.
The notice, inviting users to sign up to the Church’s official Facebook page, will appear throughout July 3.
The advert was donated to the Church by digital entrepreneur Andrew Fraser, who owns prnt-scrn.com and is a member of the St Columba’s congregation in Edinburgh.
A Free Church of Scotland spokesman said: “We are very grateful to Mr Fraser for giving us this unprecedented opportunity.
“Although a number of our ministers and congregations use Facebook and Twitter, we understand this is the first time a denomination the size of the Free Church has actually advertised on Facebook.
“Social media brings huge opportunities and supports what we’re already doing in a very cost-effective way.
“It’s fair to say in recent years there has been a declining interest in the Church in general, and this is one way of showing the Free Church of Scotland is relevant and willing to engage with the culture of the day.
“We can now better inform our members and the public about all of the great things the Free Church is doing that no one really knows much about.”
