NHS puts plans in place for Scotland to tackle pandemic

Contingency plans drawn up by local NHS boards show how everyday health services would be affected by a human influenza pandemic hitting Scotland. The documents also reveal plans to deal with the extra deaths during a pandemic. In Fife, bodies awaiting embalming, burial or cremation could be stored in freezer lorries parked at the naval base in Rosyth.

Funeral services may be shortened to the point where they do not take place at all, with families given the option of having a church or memorial service later on. The NHS Western Isles plan states: "We have plans for mass burial on land, should that be necessary. Consideration may also be given to burial at sea."
