Boost for family support project

Feature on a family support project run by St Andrew's Parish Church in Dundee, which has received a grant from the Daily Record's Changing Lives campaign. Project leader Kathryn Sidey said: "The St Andrew's Project was started by the church as they wanted to do something for the community and had noticed the number of young parents living locally.

"It was developed by volunteers within the church with the support of the Early Years Childcare team in Dundee. We offer support and help, as we found that young parents weren't accessing mainstream support and services.

"You can signpost these things as much as you like but it still doesn't work. So what we are trying to do is to bring such services here or enable them to use them.

"The focus is on interaction. What young parents have said to me is they don't want to remain on state benefits for the rest of their lives. They want to move on and to contribute to the community however they can. But many of the problems they face have to do with confidence and self-esteem."
