Reverend raising cash with a run of Biblical proportions

A Methodist minister has set up his own gruelling 50 kilometre charity run because he was never free on Sundays to take part in most organised marathons. Geoffrey Baines is bidding to raise enough money to help build a house for a family in the former Soviet republic of Kyrgyzstan through the Edinburgh-based charity Hope Into Homes.

But the keen runner, who is honorary chaplain for Heriot-Watt, Edinburgh and Napier universities and works in the capital's five Methodist churches, was forced to create his own event - five miles longer than a regular marathon.

He said: "I have had to invent my own solo run because of the timing of most marathons - and also because I wanted to push myself to run further than I have before."

Rev Baines, 47, hopes to raise £1235 from his mammoth run on a circuit from the city centre to the Pentland Hills.
