Abbey gets religious habit back
Holyrood Abbey is to host its first church service for more than 40 years to mark the start of Holy Week. A Palm Sunday procession organised by three Old Town churches will end in the ruined 12th century abbey in the grounds of Holyrood Palace.Church members will carry an 8ft wooden cross down the Royal Mile before holding a prayer and hymn service in the historic abbey.
Today Historic Scotland said it would be the first time a religious service had been held there since at least the 1960s. However, in medieval times the abbey was at the centre of Scottish religious life. The last major service held there was the coronation of Charles I in 1633.
The congregations of Old St Paul's Scottish Episcopal Church, St Patrick's RC Church and the Canongate Kirk are planning the joint celebration on April 1.
