Tributes paid after death of Cardinal's advisor
Tributes were paid today following the death of an Edinburgh priest who was one of Cardinal Keith O'Brien's closest advisors. Monsignor Anthony McNally, parish priest of St Columba's, Upper Gray Street, died in Edinburgh Royal Infirmary on Wednesday.Mgr McNally, 74, originally of Buccleuch Street, served his parish to the end, performing a wedding at the weekend before arranging cover for his Sunday masses after feeling unwell.
Cardinal Keith O'Brien said: "Father Tony had a rock-like faith - one which inspired me to ask him to be one of my closest advisers on my own appointment as Archbishop in 1985.
"He remained valiantly at that task of being one of my Vicars General, assuming various other responsibilities, including the heavy responsibility of being Rector of our Archdiocesan Seminary at the Gillis Centre, before returning to parish work.
"His heart was indeed in pastoral work, whether in our parishes, in this Archdiocese, or as a volunteer for service in Bauchi in Northern Nigeria."
