Unholy row over the closure of railbridge at Jinky’s church
The priest who said Requiem Mass for Celtic legend Jimmy Johnstone says he fears future funerals at his church could descend into chaos and the elderly could be prevented from attending services there.Exactly a year after the little winger’s touching send-off, Father Dominic Towey claimed that other families face heartache because of the proposed closure of a railbridge next to his church.
Hundreds of mourners packed into St John the Baptist’s, Uddingston, on St Patrick’s Day last year.
They included singer Rod Stewart and his girlfriend Penny Lancaster, Sir Alex Ferguson, the entire Celtic squad plus Jimmy’s widow, Agnes, and family.
But Father Towey believes that groups of mourners could in future find themselves split up if Network Rail proceed with plans to close the road bridge over the main Glasgow-London railway line next to his church.
