Bishop speaks out against wind farm proposals

Wind farm proposals for Lewis have been criticised by the Episcopalian Bishop of Argyll and The Isles, the Rt Rev Martin Shaw.

After listening to the arguments for and against the proposals and the concerns and objections of local people, including members of the area's Scottish Episcopal churches, he said: "While local feelings have not been ignored they have been effectively side-lined by arguments that are lacking in clarity and environmental facts, whether they are local or international.

"The major effects of global warming are on a 50 or 100 year scale. This is something which has been in process since the start of the industrial revolution. Although we probably need to consider urgent action, we don't have to take panic action and spend money ineffectively and destructively."

Bishop Martin was also keen to stress the importance and value of the beauty of the Lewis moorland and its wildlife.
