Abbot sex charge trial date fixed

A trial date has been set for a former Devon abbot who pleaded not guilty to 21 charges of indecent assault on 10 young boys.

William Patrick Manahan had been Abbot of Buckfast Abbey, Buckfastleigh, since 2003 but resigned in December 2006.

Mr Manahan, 79, appeared at Exeter Crown Court where Judge Graham Cottle granted unconditional bail until his trial on 19 November.

The alleged offences took place at a school between 1968 and 1991.

Buckfast Abbey is a self-supporting Benedictine monastery known for its production of wine and honey.
