'I plead guilty''

A shame-faced prosecutor has quit his job over claims he made an anti-Catholic remark on a night out.

Rookie procurator fiscal John Gardner, 36, resigned last week following a claim he used the term "Fenian" in an offensive manner in front of colleagues.

He was being trained to prosecute a range of crimes at Greenock Sheriff Court, including sectarian offences.

The alleged incident happened at a night out at the Waterline Bar in Greenock this month.
