Government steps up fight to protect trafficking victims

Social action charity CARE has welcomed the Home Office's signature of the Council of Europe Convention on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings and the release of the UK Action Plan on Tackling Human Trafficking today.

Every year thousands of men, women and children are trafficked into the UK and forced into prostitution, domestic servitude, forced labour and other areas of exploitation.

CARE has been campaigning to end the trafficking of people for sexual exploitation. It is estimated that there are at least 4000 trafficked women are in prostitution at any one time in the UK.

“The source of trafficking for sexual exploitation must be tackled” says Nola Leach, CARE head of public affairs “The demand created by prostitution and lack of clear legislation has created a ready made market for traffickers to exploit."

“It is vital that swift implementation and ratification of the convention follows. There are many vulnerable people in this country who would suffer severely from procedural delay.”
