Cash boost to ensure survival of monastery

A 19th-century Perth monastery which attracts about 2,000 visitors a year is set to get more cash from Perth Common Good Fund to finance a major restoration project.

St Mary's Monastery, which overlooks the city from Kinnoull Hill, was designed by Perth's most celebrated architect, Andrew Heiton.

The monastery trustees have recently carried out extensive work to the crypt of the B-listed building as a part of a woodland walk on Kinnoull Hill.

The total cost of the project is £111,140, of which £85,000 has been raised by the monastery itself, leaving a shortfall of just over £26,000.
