On the ball with faith, hope and bigotry

Review of Roderick Buchanan's exhibition, Histrionics, which runs at Glasgow's Gallery of Modern Art until October 28. "Entering Roddy Buchanan's monumental, walk-through work of art, you are left in no doubt as to his theme. That fatal combination of a marching band and football jerseys can mean only one thing in Glasgow. The curse of religious sectarianism may not affect the everyday lives of all Scots, but in certain parts of this city it's still horribly real and Buchanan's installation tackles it head-on with uncompromising honesty."

"This is Buchanan's strongest work to date. A brave and powerful social lament, evoking countless unrecorded episodes of physical pain and mental torment, it is surely one of the most significant Scottish artistic achievements of the past few decades: a Clydeside Guernica, bathed in blood and bigotry but rooted, at last, in hope."
