Miracle of engineering as church built in block of flats
A church has been built inside a new block of flats - with a 1ft-thick ceiling so the neighbours won't get woken up on a Sunday morning.The Port of Leith Housing Association built the £2.7 million development, providing 24 affordable homes and a new base for the Duke Street United Reformed Church.
Several features of the original 19th century church, including stained glass windows and the organ, have been retained in the plush new entrance hall and revamped foyer.
The project has been hailed as "a great deal for everyone", providing new premises for the congregation and much-needed affordable housing in Leith.
Leslie Morrison, minister of the church, explained: "Like many other congregations we had very little cash and an ageing church much bigger than was needed."
