Edwin Eunson

Obituary of Edwin Eunson OBE, Orkney public servant and local agent of the Liberal Party; born 25 December, 1917, in Kirkwall; died 20 March, 2007, in Inverness, aged 89.

Edwin Eunson was one of Orkney's most dedicated and distinguished residents. He served the island with generosity and gave his time and energy to countless organisations and individuals, always sympathetically and without fuss.

The Church also played a central part in Eunson's life. He was an elder at King Street United Free Church and, after its amalgamation with Paterson Church of Scotland, was the session clerk from 1987. He was passionate about the history of Orkney and an avid supporter of the ancient ba' game, played with much enthusiasm every Christmas in Kirkwall.

Eunson remained throughout his life a modest and good-natured man. A man of much learning, sound judgment and blessed with a keen - rather wry- sense of humour.

He was awarded the OBE and made a Freeman of Orkney in 1992. He was made a Commander of the Royal Norwegian Order of Merit in 1987. The ceremony, presided over by King Olaf V - with the Queen Mother in attendance - took place on the Norwegian royal yacht, the Norge.
