Professor George Thomson

Obituary of Professor George Thomson, emeritus professor of educational psychology at the University of Edinburgh; born 30 June, 1936, in Penicuik; died 1 April, 2007, at sea, aged 70.

George Thomson was a man of many parts and a character who was truly larger than life. He was a highly respected academic, an intrepid traveller, a community activist and leader, an adviser and friend to many, a loving family man and much more.

The Church of Scotland played an influential role in Thomson's life. In 1975 he was ordained as an elder in what was to become St Andrew's Leckie parish church. He also contributed to the extended work of the Church as a selection board assessor, as a member of the church and nation committee and, more recently, as the Church of Scotland representative on the Scottish Borders Council education committee.
