Kirk mounts cash drive to keep its classic organ

An Inverness church must raise £150,000 to keep its "Rolls Royce" of organs in working order. The Old High Church, in Church Street, is taking advantage of Highland 2007 to stage a programme of concerts to help fund essential repairs to their "Father" Willis pipe organ.

The organ, built by Henry Willis, who supplied the instruments to the Albert Hall and Canterbury Cathedral, is believed to have been installed in the late 1800s and was last repaired in 1977.

As a key feature of the oldest church in Inverness, the organ is of great importance, not only to the congregation of the Old High Church itself, but as part of the history of the city as a whole.

In response to a massive £150,000 quote to carry out essential work on the organ, members of the church have planned a summer season of concerts taking advantage of the wonderful acoustics in the Old High Church and providing entertainment to tie in with the Highland 2007 programme.
