Bertha Wilson

Obituary of Bertha Wilson, the first woman to sit on Canada's Supreme Court; born 18 September, 1923, in Kirkcaldy; died 28 April, 2007, in Ottawa, aged 83.

Bertha Wilson was a working-class lass from Kirkcaldy who became a schoolteacher, married a Presbyterian minister and emigrated to Canada with a head full of dreams. Soon after arriving in her new Scotland - Nova Scotia - she ignored a law professor's advice to "go home: stick to being a parson's wife and crocheting". Fortunately for Canada, he was very wrong. While her husband continued to preach, Wilson studied law from the age of 31 and went on to become the first-ever female justice on Canada's Supreme Court.
