Tributes paid to a popular priest

The death has occurred at St Joseph's Nursing Home in Edinburgh of Peter Canon Gallacher, who was born and bred in Milton of Campsie.

Canon Gallagher was born in 1923. After being educated at Blairs and Oscott College, he was ordained in the priesthood in St Machan's, Lennoxtown by Archbishop Andrew McDonald in 1946. Following that he fulfilled various parish appointments.

He also studied at the University of Edinburgh and was awarded a first class honours degree in English, before continuing to achieve his teaching qualification for secondary schools.

For some 17 years he was also Chaplain to the Poor Clare Convent, in Edinburgh, before being appointed as parish priest in St Agatha's, Methil in 1987.

At the funeral mass the principal concelebrant, Cardinal Keith Patrick O'Brien, paid tribute to the life and work of Canon Gallagher.

He said: "The Canon is one of those long-serving priests of our Archdiocese who fulfilled his vocation as a priest and teacher throughout a long and active priestly ministry."
