The £1 million manse

The Kirk are set to sell one of their manses for £1 million for the first time. St Mary's Manse in Haddington, a grade B-listed building, is for sale at offers over £825,000.

But with property prices in East Lothian booming, it could easily top the £1million mark. St Mary's Parish Church is currently without a minister.

Elders have decided to sell the manse and buy a more suitable home for the incoming minister.

Session clerk Sir Roy Cameron said: "It is a marvellous old property but one with significant maintenance and running costs.

"We sought approval of the Kirk session and board and presbytery and trustees for the sale."

St Mary's Manse has six bedrooms and three reception rooms plus a large, private walled garden and looks like something out of a Jane Austen novel.

It was built in 1821 to the exacting requirements of the then minister the Rev Robert Lorimer.
