Young drinkers' habits uncovered
Buckfast is the preferred drink of young 'neds' because they see it as being macho, according to new research. The survey also found that subculture may play a huge part in the types of drinks chosen by young people.
The Glasgow Caledonian University researchers interviewed 100 people aged between 16 and 25 as part of a study of youngsters who drank on the streets.
Their report said the manufacturers of some of these drinks could cut violence by changing to plastic bottles.
The survey divided drinkers into three broad social groups.
'Neds' expressed a strong preference for Buckfast wine, which they saw as an iconic drink.
'Mainstream' and 'alternative' subcultures rejected the fortified wine because of its connection with 'neds'.
They chose drinks that tasted pleasant and had a high cost-to-strength ratio, such as Lambrini and vodka mixes.
