Religious political parties fail to attract Church's blessing

The Kirk has refused to back political parties that take a explicitly Christian stance. During the recent Holyrood elections, the Scottish Christian Party and Christian People's Alliance claimed to represent the authentic voice of the church-going population, but fared badly during the elections.

Yesterday, Morag Mylne, the convener of the Church and Society Council, was asked whether the Kirk had felt obliged to back the parties. She said it had never felt this was necessary.

"It is important to recognise there are Christians in all of the mainstream political parties in Scotland and to say that if you are Christian, therefore you have to align with yourself with this particular, perhaps narrow, perhaps limited, group of people with a particular agenda is to go against the truly held, sincere convictions of Christians who are engaged in politics in mainstream parties," she said.
