Project to transform historic kirk given £50,000 boost
The transformation of one of Aberdeen's most historic landmarks has been given an enormous boost with help from oil giant Shell. The company yesterday pledged £50,000 towards the Mither Kirk Project which seeks to regenerate the 900-year-old East Kirk at the Kirk of St Nicholas in the city centre.
Yesterday's announcement marks the largest donation which has been made to the £5.1million project to date. The completed project will establish a modern community facility with space for concerts, conferences and classes, as well as a shop and cafe.
There will also be a life-skills training kitchen where people can learn to cook and learn about healthy eating. Shell's donation, which marks the first major corporate sponsor secured by the project, will be split over two years.
Some £2.3 million of the funding for the ambitious project has already been met thanks to awards from the City of Aberdeen and the Heritage Lottery Fund, in addition to contributions made by the Kirk of St Nicholas itself.
