Anti-Catholic bias alleged

There is outrage in Rosewell following the revelation of plans to take away one of St Matthew's RC Primary School's most valued teachers — due to a drop in pupil numbers below 50.

Canon Hugh White, of St Matthew's Church, says he believes there is a "sinister" anti-Catholic bias manifest in the move, which is part of a wider politically motivated aim to phase out Roman Catholic schools by withholding money.

Emotions were running high at a packed public meeting when Midlothian Council's director of education, Donald MacKay came face to face with irate parents, teachers and residents — who feel that the education of local children will be compromised as a result of the move.

It is believed that any local Roman Catholic child reaching school age, or one moving into the area, will now be denied access to the school.
