Workmen bury historic grave

The site of Edinburgh' first Jewish grave has been covered in tarmac by council workers. Three stone slabs had marked an underground 18th-century crypt on Calton Hill.

It was built by a Jewish family as Jews were not allowed to be buried in city cemeteries.

But it is thought workmen were unaware of the significance of flagstone markers when they re-laid a path over the spot.

The crypt, which measures 11ft by 14ft and has a 40 metre-long passageway, was bought from the council for £17 by corn-cutter and dentist Hermon Lyon in 1795.
