Neil Lennon: Bigotry in Scotland

Neil Lennon believes the west of Scotland is trailing behind Northern Ireland in the battle to rid society of sectarianism.

He made the claim in a sensational interview with the Daily Record - as a parting shot ahead of his departure from Celtic to Nottingham Forest.

Lennon, who captained the Parkhead club to an SPL and Scottish Cup double last season, has spent seven years in Glasgow against a backdrop of bigotry, bile and hatred.

And he fears the city he has grown to love may be left in the dark ages at a time when his own homeland embraces a new era of religious tolerance.

Lennon said: "I have never spoken about my religion or my politics because I'm not educated enough to talk about those things.

"I am a Catholic and I go to church every now and then when I can. But I have never gone out looking to ram it down anybody's throat.

"I have grown up in a place where these things can mean life or death. I know how serious they are.

"But even the people of Northern Ireland are trying to leave all that stuff in the past. If they can do it, then surely the people of the west of Scotland can too."
