Inverness churches in move to revive art of handbell ringing

Two Inverness churches are seeking to revive the mediaeval musical art of handbell ringing in the Highland capital.

The idea of setting up a group came from interim moderator of Old High St Stephen's joint congregation, the Rev Douglas Clyne, with the backing of Old High organist and former Inverness secondary schools piano teacher Rena Beaton.

Both are keen to set up a group in Inverness, spanning all ages, open to musically-inclined churchgoers and non-churchgoers alike.

The once-popular art, practised widely in churches all over the mediaeval world, suffered almost terminal decline in Scotland with the 16th-century arrival of the Reformation, which forbade the religious use of all musical instruments, except for solitary bells to call worshippers to church.
