Sally Army to rescue of homeless hit by Ark closure

The Salvation Army has stepped in to help homeless people left with nowhere to go following the closure of The Ark drop-in centre in Edinburgh.

The charity has extended the opening hours at its Bread Street centre so it can offer breakfasts to people who have spent the night sleeping rough or in homeless hostels.

It said it was essential to open two hours earlier each day, at 7am, after The Ark - which provided cheap food and facilities each morning for rough sleepers - closed its doors on Friday because of lack of funding.

The Ark hopes to be able to reopen at New Street, just off Canongate, in time for winter, but the Salvation Army has vowed to help fill the gap until then.

The Salvation Army's pledge comes as The Ark's volunteers and regulars set up a stand outside the council's new headquarters to protest again the authority axing its funding.
