MBE for minister in Honours List

A Church of Scotland minister who has has carried out missionary work during recent years in Sri Lanka has been handed an MBE in the Queen’s Honours List.

Rev John Purves, minister of St Andrew’s Church in Colombo, has close contacts with St John’s Church in Largs and visited the local area last summer and gave a talk to the Sunday service about his missionary work. He has a flat in Largs and plans to return for his retirement.

Rev Purves was in Sri Lanka during the Tsunami and narrowly missed visited one of the disaster hit locations by a matter of hours after travelling to the location on Boxing Day to be confronted with the horrors of the aftermath which shocked the world.

Reverend Andrew McGurk of St John’s in Largs said: “We’re sure that everyone who knows John would like to join with us in congratulating him on his many years dedicated service to his congregation and the wider community in Sri Lanka.”
