Rare organ to resound with 50,000 notes from lotto
A rare church organ donated to an Edinburgh parish by philanthropist Andrew Carnegie is to be restored to its former glory. The Dean Parish Church organ is one of only 48 in the UK to be marked as of "significant historical interest" by the British Institute of Organ Studies.
It is badly in need of repair, but church leaders can now press ahead with restoration work thanks to a £50,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery fund.
Rev Mark Foster, minister of the Dean Village church, said he was looking forward to hearing the restored pipes booming out once more.
"The organ's a fragile old Edwardian lady now, in real need of some tender loving care from the experts to restore her to her former glory," he said. "It will be a powerful moment to hear the organ's new voice in church when the work is complete.
"Music is an integral part of what we do here. It's always been at the heart of our faith and worship. Music can reach out to people and uplift them across traditional boundaries where words alone may sometimes not."
