Church prays for a new flock

A historic Edinburgh church has been left searching for a congregation after its parishioners moved to pastures new.

The impressive Glasite Meeting House in Barony Street has been a place of worship for around 170 years. But earlier this year it was forced to close for emergency repairs, which took six months to complete.

The closure forced the Free Church of Scotland Continuing congregation who worshipped there to look for an alternative home, which they found in Morningside.

Now the work has been completed, the Architectural Heritage Society of Scotland (AHSS), which owns the building, is searching for a new congregation to take their place.

It doesn't mind what faith the worshippers belong to, but are keen to see the building continue to be used for its original purpose.

The chapel, designed by renowned Edinburgh architect Alexander Black, was the city base for the Glasite sect - founded by clergyman John Glas - for around 150 years until the late 1980s.

But when the congregation began to dwindle around 20 years ago, the group decided to gift the building to the AHSS.
