Super-casino rethink is best bet, says Kirk
The Church of Scotland has welcomed Prime Minister Gordon Brown's promise to rethink plans for super-casinos. Morag Mylne, convener of the Kirk's church and society council, praised minister's son Mr Brown for his announcement of a review, which was later interpreted by Whitehall sources as meaning the Manchester super-casino scheme was "dead in the water".She said: "As Christians, we are gravely concerned at the proliferation of gambling opportunities and we strongly believe the government must take seriously its responsibility for the vulnerable in society.
"The growth of the gambling culture in our country is disturbing and, we believe, damaging. Gambling offers a false hope as a route out of poverty.
"We are, therefore, encouraged to learn that the government intends to look again at the questions of super-casinos and regeneration."
The Prime Minister said on Wednesday that regeneration may be a better way of helping deprived inner-city areas than creating Las Vegas-style casinos.
