John puts on his Sunday best

A Greenock churchgoer has had congregations rolling in the aisles. Barnard’s Court Mission in East Hamilton Street is famous for its witty and thought-provoking signs, which have been dreamt up by John Burleigh.

Now John has had his efforts recognised in a UK-wide competition held amongst churches, where people could nominate their favourite slogan.

His slogan ‘Good Friday: A bad day to bury Good News’ was chosen as one of the winners by the judges of the Congregational Church Poster of the Year.

John, from Gourock, designs all of Barnard’s Court’s eye-catching posters. He said: “I heard about the competition on Radio 4. I sent in a few of ours and this one was picked. I am delighted.

“They have to be big and catchy, and they are aimed at all passers-by, football supporters, pedestrians, motorists and cyclists.”

The contest was launched three months ago and the organisers were overwhelmed by the number of responses they received. They announced the competition on BBC Radio 4’s Sunday programme.
