Priest resigns after claims of sex incident

A Glasgow priest has resigned from his post following allegations of a sex incident. Father Jim Lawlor, 44, of Our Lady and St George Church, Penilee, has now been reported to the procurator fiscal following the alleged incident on Friday, July 6.

The police are investigating the allegations, which have also appeared in a national newspaper. No one else is believed to have been involved.

A spokesman for the Catholic Church said: "Given this is an active case we can neither confirm or deny any details that are being alleged.

"Father Lawlor has resigned from his post and has left the church house. In the meantime, parishioners are still receiving pastoral care. Services are being carried out by a retired priest who has stepped in to help."

The spokesman added that it was too early to tell whether or not further action would be taken while the matter is in the hands of the police.

A Strathclyde Police spokesman said: "We can confirm a 44-year-old man is the subject of a report to the procurator fiscal."
