Jail for Salvation Army attack

A man who savagely beat a Salvation Army worker who later died was jailed yesterday. Welder Neal Todd, 46, launched the assault after his pal Gordon Fyvie, 55, told him he was gay during a drinking session.

Barely conscious, Mr Fyvie was left on the floor as his pals continued drinking around him before they left the house in Perth.

Worried colleagues from the Salvation Army found him badly bruised and groggy in his bed several days later.

Doctors at Perth Royal Infirmary sent him home thinking he was only suffering from bruising.

But he was found dead in his bed at his Perth home on 18 April this year - 12 days after the attack.

An autopsy found brain damage consistent with having been kicked in the head.

Todd, originally of Glasgow, admitted assaulting Mr Fyvie by repeatedly punching and kicking him on the face and body.

Sheriff Colin McClory jailed Todd for 18 months at Perth Sheriff Court.
