New bishop quits in thrift shop row

A bishop has resigned from his church only weeks after being ordained at ancient Crossraguel Abbey. But former lighthouse keeper Malcolm Kelly, 60, remains a Bishop, even though he is no longer in the Celtic Church in Scotland.

Mr Kelly says there have been ‘differences over the running of the charity shop’.

He opened the shop, in Girvan’s Dalrymple Street, earlier this year.

And he aims to keep it going as a fundraiser for his own church — the Celtic Church of the Culdees.

Mr Kelly said: “The Culdees were ancient holy people who lived by the scriptures.

“I will continue to fundraise in the shop with the aim of establishing a regular place of worship for people who wish to follow the pure teachings of the Celtic Church.”

The national Celtic Church appears to be in some disarray, as Bishop Kelly is the latest of a number of leading lights to leave.

And the Celtic Church in Scotland website has disappeared from the internet.
