Insolent 999 operator to be retrained

A 999 operator who refused to send police officers to help two Edinburgh church officials after they caught a thief has been ordered to go for extra training.

James MacLean, who caught the man after he stole the church's Sunday collection, has also received an apology from the Lothian and Borders force following the incident on July 8.

Mr MacLean said he was told by a police inspector that the service he received fell "far short" of what was expected and the operator who dealt with his call was to be sent on a training course.

Mr MacLean - who, along with church treasurer Noel Connor, caught the thief - complained to chief constable David Strang about the attitude of the "insolent" operator, claiming they were put at risk when he refused to send back-up.

The incident happened after a man was spotted stealing two collection envelopes from the St Margaret's Scottish Episcopal Church, on Easter Road.
