Edinburgh churches blast council over Ark closure crisis

Church leaders are to challenge Edinburgh city council over the Capital's street drunk crisis following the closure of a "lifeline" drop-in centre.

They are to pressure the local authority to do more to help some of the city's most desperate homeless people following the closure of the Ark cafe in New Street.

The centre was forced to close its doors after the council cut its funding at the end of June.

Since then, around 100 homeless people have been forced on to the streets during the day, as they are no longer able to get a cheap, hot meal in the morning.

The closure has led to a dramatic increase in the number of street drinkers, which has created a backlash from residents and shop-keepers who say some parts of the city have become a "no-go zone".
