UK churches set to make the most of Evan Almighty

Evan Almighty, said to be the most expensive Hollywood comedy ever, opens in the UK today with some churches expected to block book cinema screenings as part of their summer outreach programmes.

The PG-rated film, aimed squarely at a family audience, tells the tale of newly-elected senator Evan Baxter (Steve Carrell) who is visited by God (Morgan Freeman) and told to build an ark of biblical proportions in northern Virginia - to save people from an impending flood.

Following a special screening of the $175m movie in Glasgow, Rev Brian Kerr, Minister of Greyfriars Parish Church, Lanark, said: “Several ministers are now trying to book their local cinemas to take a congregation to watch the film. All the church leaders who were there are keen to encourage congregations to go. My kids were enthralled and are still talking about it.”
