Father Tom Allan

Obituary of Father Tom Allan, schoolteacher and priest; born 9 May, 1926, in Edinburgh; died 22 July, 2007, in Edinburgh, aged 81.

Father Tom Allan was a man of devotion and dignity who was brought up in Edinburgh and taught English literature at various schools in Scotland. In later life, he took holy orders in England and was ordained at the age of 62. Fr Allan was a priest in west London and, in 1991, was appointed a chaplain at Westminster Cathedral.

He was a man of wide and informed learning and his passion for literature gave him great pleasure all his life. His own profound spiritual beliefs were firmly based on Benedictine values and he remained a popular figure at Westminster Cathedral, where his scholarship and kindly manner is remembered with special affection. "Fr Tom really remained a spiritual son of Edinburgh. But he will be missed greatly by the cathedral community," Msgr Mark Langham, the administrator of Westminster Cathedral has recently written, "and by all those who benefited from his wisdom and holiness."
