Former Haddington minister returns
Former minister at St Mary's, the Rev Clifford Hughes, is to make an emotional return to Haddington on Sunday August 12 when he will take the 9.30 am and 11 am services at the church.Mr Hughes, who has won a battle against larnyx cancer, will be returning with his wife Kathleen, who played a major part in what was effectively a joint ministry. The former head teacher at Loretto Junior School in Musselburgh told the News: "The people of St Mary's were wonderfully supportive when I succumbed to voice cancer and my wife Kathleen and I were surrounded by love, sympathy and prayerful concern. I thought my life was, effectively, over.
"My careers had been voice centred, as a teacher, a singer, and climactically, as minister at St Mary's. Then my larynx was removed.
"So, how wonderful it is to be able to return with a new voice to the people whose love had carried me through the darkest period in my life, to minister to them again.
"It's nothing short of a miracle."
