History is made as faiths join to clean up graveyard

Muslims, Christians and Jews joined forces yesterday to remove graffiti from a vandal-hit graveyard. In what one MSP described as "no better example of community cohesion", people from many different faiths helped clean up Sandymount Cemetery in Glasgow.

The event was organised by the Muslim community in Glasgow, led by Rizi Mohammed.

He managed to get the local police and fire service to lend a hand, along with professional stonemasons to advise people about repairs to gravestones.

The clean-up was "history in the making", said Mr Mohammed, as Muslims washed Jewish gravestones and vice versa.

He said believers worked beside non-believers and Catholics with Protestants.
