Cardinal plans cultural visit to China

Scotland's most senior Roman Catholic will this week become the first western leader of his Church to visit China this century, beginning a 12-day pastoral visit to the country.

Cardinal Keith O'Brien's trip is being organised by an organisation promoting cultural exchange with China and includes visits to three of the most interesting and spectacular cities - Beijing, Shanghai and Xian, which is twinned with Edinburgh.

The invitation of the cardinal is a clear sign of an easing in the tension which has existed between the Vatican and China for decades.

He also intends to also make links with Protestant churches in China.
