'Bigoted' graffiti targets school

Dumfries and Galloway Council has condemned a "bigoted" graffiti attack on a Roman Catholic primary school.

The incident took place some time overnight between Sunday and Monday at St Ninian's Primary in Newton Stewart.

A police spokesman said they were "particularly disappointed" at the language used in the attack.

Education committee chairperson Sandra McDowall said she was appalled by the incident and said the authority was totally opposed to sectarianism.

A spokesperson for the Catholic Church in Scotland also expressed disappointment at the incident.

"It is extremely saddening that there are still a small number of people within our communities who wish to continue spreading hatred towards Catholicism," he said.

"However, they are swimming against the tide of progress and end up only alienating themselves from a modern inclusive Scotland, confident of its Catholic tradition."
