Brown breaks with Christmas tradition
Gordon Brown has distanced himself from his predecessor, Tony Blair, over yet another issue, that of Christmas cards.The Prime Minister has refrained from putting a picture of himself or his family on the front of the card, unlike Mr Blair whose fixed grin would greet all those lucky enough to receive a festive greeting from No10.
Mr Brown and his wife, Sarah, will instead send charity Christmas cards bearing a picture of ten youngsters, a cat and a dog gathered around a Christmas tree held by a boy sporting the number ten on his shirt. A Downing Street spokesman said: "2008 is the National Year of Reading. To mark this, the Prime Minister has asked Shirley Hughes, OBE, the children's author who recently celebrated her 80th birthday, to design this year's card.
"All proceeds will go to Booktrust, an independent national charity that encourages people of all ages and backgrounds to discover and enjoy reading."
