Strang agent and Hinds lead race to replace MP

Gavin Strang's election agent, Mike Robb, and former Lord Provost Lesley Hinds today emerged as front-runners in the race to succeed the long-serving Labour MP after he steps down.

Dr Strang, who has represented Edinburgh East at Westminster for the past 37 years, announced yesterday he would retire at the next general election.

Former Edinburgh council leader Ewan Aitken, who was seen by many in the party as a likely candidate, said: "I'm not going to go for it because the law means I would have to demit my role as a Church of Scotland minister."
