Villagers in 'rent-a-church' plan

Perthshire parishioners hope to buy their closure-threatened kirk from the Church of Scotland and then rent it back for Sunday services.

Kilmadock Church in Doune is set to close within months because of its dwindling congregation. Locals hope to turn the church into a community centre - with services held in one of its rooms every Sunday.

If their community buy-out bid succeeds, the 300-year-old church could be divided into smaller rooms, with the Church of Scotland using one on Sunday mornings.

Several communities have sought to retain former Church of Scotland buildings, with Comrie in Perthshire turning the town's iconic "White Church" into a very successful community centre.

The 13th Century St Serf's Church in Dunning has been placed into the care of Historic Scotland and acts as a museum-setting for the 9th Century Dupplin Cross.
