Orphanage trustee defends North-East nuns

A trustee of an African orphanage has come to the defence of two north-east nuns accused of running a children's home like a "concentration camp".

Dr Noel Mack, of Kemnay, last night said she was "shocked" by allegations that Dorothy Clark, 65, and Jane Burchill, 76, had mistreated children at the Little Sisters in Jesus orphanage in central Zambia.

Allegations emerged earlier this week that children were being kept in horrific conditions - branded "total slavery" by a Zambian human rights commissioner.

Dr Mack, however, praised the work of the sisters, who live in Aberdeen's Bucksburn district.

She said: " I have visited the orphanage on three occasions and always found happy children who were enjoying access to education, food and medicine.

"I have been trying to make contact with the people who have made these allegations but it has been very difficult. Trying to speak to the sister in charge of the orphanage is not easy. There is no phone line or electricity so I have written to her and hope to hear back soon."
