Abbey farm blaze
A ferocious blaze, believed to have been sparked deliberately, tore through a straw storage shed at the Santa Maria Abbey in Nunraw on Tuesday, sending flames soaring 40ft into the night sky.Fire crews battled to contain the blaze, fuelled by 120 bales of barley straw stockpiled inside, but avoided catastrophe by saving four neighbouring cattle barns – one storing 600 gallons of diesel – from ignition by the inferno, which caused more than £6,000 worth of damage.
A local resident, who rescued the abbey’s dogs from a kennel in the cattle barn opposite, was first to react.
The farm manager, Brother Aiden Hunt, said that the monastery has received messages of support from local residents.
