Vandals destroy charity collection van

A fire which destroyed a Highland charity's collection van is being treated as suspicious by police. The Blythswood vehicle was parked beside Smithton Free Church when it was found ablaze early yesterday morning.

It is one of three vans run by the charity in the Highlands and was purchased around two years ago. The van was thought to be empty at the time of the fire.

The Christian charity collects clothing, food, bedding and other items from households across the north which it then supplies to overseas countries in eastern Europe, including Romania, Russia, Albania, Bosnia, and Serbia. They also carry out missionary and relief work in Italy, Hong Kong, Rwanda, Burundi and Sierra Leone.
